You missed my point
I was not attributing the creation of the VM to Java. I was stating that Java is the current popular VM, and the ".Net Framework" was designed to use MS's monopoly advantage to kill the JVM.

I did not state that the .Net Framework was the latest incarnation of ActiveX. I did state that they had the same purpose, allow web applications to run local code, which is the same purpose as Java Applets.

Knowing MS's track record, I would be surprised if the .Net Framework allowed full sandboxing of all code. MS always leaves that small hole so that developers can wipe the hard drive if it seems like a good idea. (Maybe I am wrong and Ms will get it right this time, but I would not even suggest you hold your breath.)

My point was that MS is still attempting to compete with Java for the client, and that this attempt may get by the monopoly busters due to the name change.
