Framework: not a virtual machine

The .Net Framework adds the same functionality as the Java Virtual Machine. The new name offers a few differences:

1. It is not a Virtual Machine. It hooks into the Operating System as well as any other virus. It will not force programs into a safe area ("sandbox") as a Virtual Machine should.

2. By calling it a Framework, MS may avoid another lawsuit about its monopolistic policies. If it does not have the same name, maybe no one will notice that its prime purpose is to eliminate the Java Virtual Machine. MS had trouble because the Internet Explorer was definitely a browser, and Windows Media Player was definitely a media player. They hope that the lawyers will not notice that this one is really an extension to allow web-based programs to run locally, just like the Java Virtual Machine.

3. MS's first try with web-based programs was called ActiveX. Most developers avoided it because most users turned it off because of the major security issues. It is doubtful that those issues have changed, but this will be installed as part of MSWindows, so people will not be able to turn it off.

I do not know when the legal entertainment will begin, but I recommend that everybody avoid the ".Net Framework" as another security hole waiting to be abused.
