The article clearly states that this was an investment by Microsoft... not government money.

The folks at MIT are 'still dealing' with Microsoft because a large part of the purpose of academia is to prepare students for the real world, and the real world is that Microsoft has about 90% of the market locked up.

The sophomoric drivel of "My OS can beat up your OS" doesn't come into play in academia.

PS... The fact that someone chooses a different OS than you doesn't make them an "a$$hole".
