Well... Maybe..Maybe Not....
I both disagree & partially agree with the parent poster..
One of the best qualities of Linux is that there is no "one" Linux.

While each has their differences, each is still basically the same.
And it depends on ones taste, temperament, hardware & experience as to which best serves your wants & needs. And one Distro can basically do anything another distro can do.

It seems to me that those with a name/market buzz & Corporate support, SuSE/Novel Ubuntu/Canonical seem most likely to get to the mainstream (first) Being distributed the same way preinstalled on hardware and available through common channels like your local big box store... this does not preclude adding or replacing with your favorite distro but greater awareness of whats available... a great resource is DistroWatch.com

BTW I think PCLinuxOS is actually one of the best for New/Casual/General Computer users, although maybe not everyones choice.

It is a fully functional LiveCD based on Mandrake with a graphical installer, partitioning tool & all the Drake admin tools and its own Synaptic repository. Not to forget all the apps for Web, Media, Graphics, Games, etc, etc.

Maybe not for everyone but definitely worth a look if one is interested......

Personally I prefer Core distros like Debian or Slack, but for some the better choice maybe
PCLinuxOS or.....
SuSE
Mepis
Ubuntu
Linspire
Vector
Etc, ETC.......
