You can't compare individuals to whole businesses.
An very important channel of revenue for Microsoft itself comes from support as well. Individual users (touted as "home users" most of the time) are not the ones requiring such support. The money is on the Enterprise level. A big enterprise needs to be assured as much as it can, not that it doesn't trust its IT department or anything, but when having a single server machine down for a problem that would take your personnel more than half a day to figure out, you need to have reassurance from the vendor. That's why Microsoft also offers support and their fees are not cheap!

That's how Red Hat has made their money. Most and single users do not require that level of support, for a single workstation you may even refuse to pay a $50 bucks annual subscription for your computer, but when you are managing a big server backend you really need all the help you can get (is the same principle as insurance, why would you need to purchase insurance for you car, when you know you drive safely?), when you are a big corporation, you'd better have all the backup, even if you don't use it (and if you don't use it, the better, but if you have to, you'll be glad you had paid for it).
