Sigh...so easily duped by Bill!
Let me dispel the "Bill's a good guy" notions point by point:

"MS does a lot of things I agree with, such as funding Educational computer labs."

They do this to seed future users, not out of the goodness of their hearts.

"I like the Bill n Melinda Gates foundation. They give away billion every year to needy 3rd worlders in the form of education and vaccine money."

They also give to the UN Population Control Fund, which is pushing birth control and even sterilization on societies and cultures that don't want that and don't believe in that. Who are we to decide whether the poor should have children? Most 3rd world citizens are not poor because they had children - they're poor because of poor government use of resources...warring factions and dictatorial leaders are preventing economies from developing and supplies from reaching the needy. We're sitting over here, consuming many times the natural resources per person that most people in the world do, and we're going to tell them that they need to reduce their population? Whoa, is that gutsy!

"I dislike how MS does business in the computer world."

Yet you want future success for them? Contradiction? I want some change first, on many levels, before I'll wish that.

I do agree that this is a good showing for the open source model, being able to turn a profit and still maintain the ideals. It does raise some questions though: how many players in OSS can survive? E.g. - what does this do to Novell & SUSE Linux, which has the other leading distro? Will they wash out of the server market? Or can they find another app server to build themselves a competing end-to-end stack with?

"and FYI... if MS stopped selling windows TOMORROW, they would still be worth several Billion and generating profit. For those who dont pay attention, MS has it's hands in everything."

Yes, they have their hands in everything...but the rest is not terribly profitable for them...just Windows and Office.
