A Var can also sell both open source and proprietary software.
There is not conflict there, he sells what customers buy or where he can make the most money. He is not tied to either one.

The problem comes with the software developers. There is a constant internal conflict between the open source and proprietary camps. The proprietary camp will put limits on the inovations of the open source group because they won't like the canablalization. The mixed company will be passed up by the open source pure play, focussed like a laser beam on inovation and features, with NO internal conflicts, and no limits on inovation.
