All or nothing??
I disagree that a software company should do both. A software company should try to do what ever they need to do satisfy and maintain their customer base.

As a VAR - you sell a lot of different things (at least I do) Some of the things you sell are Open Source related (Like Linux Servers or IP Cop routers) and some are proprietary (like Windows Workstations or Cisco routers, etc.) And then you sell your labor to put it all together and make it work.

"For a company that is a consumer of software, it makes perfect sense to use a mix of open source and proprietary software."

If it makes sense as a consumer to mix OS and Proprietary, why wouldn't it also make sense as a supplier to provide both??
