(1). That's easy! File --> Save As --> MS Word
2000 / MS Excel 2000 / Power Point 2000. Next!
(2) I know how I want my documents formatted, and
a lot of times it's not the way MS Office
believes I should do it, so it is still annoying.
Guess I like to use my own cranial capacity to do
my own job... the way my job is supposed to be
done by company doctrine, not MS Office
dictation.
(3) Hey, the only PC I have to even run an
anti-virus on is MS Windows powered! Good grief!
As far as rebooting, well when the corporate
update tool pops a window up on your screen
telling you to save your work and reboot to
enable the new security and anti virus updates, I
have 2 choices:
A - Do it, and let MS Windows do what it
does after an update.
B - Ignore it and run the risk of maybe,
just maybe being infected with a work or virus
See because of my experience with Linux, I never
reboot or shutdown, the only reason my Linux
systems come down is:
1 - My laptop... if I am not going to be using
it for a couple days and it's in my carry case. I
shut it down.
2 - Power outage! Happens occassionally here
in Central CA.
Otherwise my systems stay on 24/7/365. I will run
my Windows systems the same way, well that is
until a security patch, software install, or the
darn thing starts running so slow that I have no
choice but to reboot to free memory! (Linux is
easy! CTRL+ALT+BKSP = restart the X server, but
it's rare that I have to do that, usually when I
am experimenting with stuff maybe... ah to have
nice memory management!)
(4) This is a fresh (2 days old as of Friday!)
from the tech room install of WinXP-Pro on a Dell
system, 1.8GHz Pentium 512MB PC-2700 RAM. I run
only what I need to run and usually I only have 5
items at most in the right portion task bar AKA
the System Tray!
The Linux laptop system is a 1.2GHz Pentium 512MB
running SuSE 9.0 Pro PC2100 RAM, and this is
usually set up with 8 desktops each with 1-3 apps
running, depending on what I need to accomplish
for the day.
Both systems are on the corporate network as
well.
See these are not atari 2600's like you want to
believe (although I am sure I could get Linux to
run on that as well!) But relativly new and
modern systems. One is a personal system that I
installed and now maintain, the other is a very
expensive system that is maintained by a team of
professionals (used loosly of course) on a common
network.
Thing is I am not the only person with the
performance complaints. Here is the real irony,
this same sysytem (work PC) had Win2K on it and
performed very well and I had nary a problem with
it for stability or speed. But because the
company is upgrading (are they really?) to
WinXP-Pro, myself and every other person that had
Win2K is pissed because now our systems are dog
slow and seem to have more issues with crashing
(not mine, at least not yet. Can't wait to fire
up Oracle!).
The only decent product MS put out in my own
personal opinion is MS Windows 2000 Pro. Here is
something else for you to chew on, I have a
personal laptop (actually I have 2 but hey...)
that has nothing but Win2K Pro on it. Why? Well
even I realize the MS does have a place in the
world! I play games silly duck! And this laptop,
a 1.7GHz Pentium 256 PC2100 RAM 32MB shared
video, is still faster than my WinXP-Pro... and I
installed and maintain the Win2K laptop as well.
But all my other (5) systems are 100% Linux. Been
runnin strong and runnin long! - Posted by: MkIIISupra Posted on: 02/28/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
