Don't Over Advertise Linux!
As is the case with any product those who strongly support it are going to promote its virtues and deny its faults! This is natural! But to over blow the whole linux experience is a diservice to your cause because in doing so you create a bar of expectation that 99.9 % percent of the average users will not atttain to and consequently you harm your movement more than help it when negative experiences happen 'Munich'. Moreover, I have read many of the pro linux posts over the last year and it is quite apparent that is more wishful thinking than anything factual in the real world! You guys are more transparent than what you can imagine! More seriously though you guys have not learned that attacking another product to promote your own never works! In fact what you invariably create is a perceived elitism and meaness! Hence many already feel linux users and promoters to be arrogant, and uncouth! This approach will always preclude you from winning the all important middle and relegate you to the fringe! Right now linux is riding the new/anti establishment/perceived to be free wave but such sentiment will not last! And after linux has finished cannabilizing or I should say unifying the unix market much of the current momemtum will be lost especially so once the various distros began to cannabilize each other seeking ever thinner dollars to be made on what is essentially free software! But even before this you guys will come to the bitter realization that just because a product is proven the best 'BSD' or the most scalable 'solaris' or the most innovative 'darwin' doesnt mean dominance or ubiquity! If you really want Linux to overcome windows in the long run, which it can but I doubt at this point, you need to learn a thing or two from Bill Gates because he is a master of what you guys havent even really started to learn yet! Believe me when I say that miscrosoft isn't going anywhere and more importantly you guys have made them the underdog so they only have to go up now with respect to security, stability, and scale. And considering that the 'nixes have had a 30 year head start, windows is looking better ever day because while you guys concentrate on winning what are becoming to be perceived petty battles your oversight is costing you the war! And perception is in the end everything!!! But what is the war? Well it is simple ! Your product must jive with the average user on his or her sensibilities! This is the holy grail of not only computing but any industry that you can name! Windows has beat out many a superior os 'os2/macos/be/' because while it is in human nature to pursue perfection/utopia/ideal it is not however what we want to attain to! Because we are not perfect ourselves we relate to imperfect products, leaders, services, mates etc! Hence windows is that perfect product ever attaining to perfection but never achieving it which reflects the human experience! Where as Linux is fast approaching os nirvana and consquently destined to be admired but never to be the average joe's os! Man you guys have lost a big chunk of the market who are insulted by free price tag! Really disturbing to many is that somehow linux is socially progressive and is empowering third world denizens living in mud huts by having a desktop! God forbid when it reaches the mainstream and it dawns on some that communist countries are being empowered by linux! That aside linux venerable as it already is by its principle in theory will join with other so called perfect/ideal/utopic os's that we admire but somehow never become an os that we as the average joe will relate to!
