Really?
"Ballmer said security "occupies a lot of my (mental) bandwidth" these days, and while much still needs to be done to satisfy customers, Microsoft is making "incredible progress" with its 2-year-old Trustworthy Computing strategy."

So he is using both brain cells at capacity? Must make it hard for monkey boy to do his dance!

Anyhow it has been pointed out time and time and time again, that the initial cost for moving from a 100% MS platform to a Linux / *BSD platform is going to be high, but over time the cost becomes negligible with the increase in uptime and reliability and the reduction of virus infections and users trashing their systems (MS again!). Built in security already there, true multi-user capability (I will explain how this IS a valid selling point!). As far as training costs, not as high as people would like to make it sound. Essentially a day maybe two at most for getting users primed for KDE or Gnome. Open Office 1.1 very good and if you insist on paying for your software because you want that comfy feeling of who knows what, StarOffice 7.0.

Yes there will most likely be a need to re-write custom applications, but hey, maybe this time the damn things will be written to a standard that is not specific to a platform! Oh what a concept that is!

If I could save $120 million over a 5 year span and more over a longer period of time with an initial investment of $35-40 million up front.... then I guess I will make the investment for the long term gains. (These numbers are fictitious and used to express a point only!!!)

Now how is the multi-user environment useful? Simple, home many of you have been in another part of the office building and needed to log in, but the one PC that is not being used has been locked by a user. Sure you can reboot the system and possibly screw the persons work up, or with Linux you can issue (SuSE is even easier, it asks if you want to start a new session!) the CTRL+ALT+F1 command then log in and then issue startx -- :1 to start a new GUI instance! Hey wow! What a concept! Now there are 2 people simultaneously logged into the PC! Hell I can do it up to 6 people if need be! And I am sure some Linux god can get more. Bottom line is now that PC that was locked by another user is now a viable asset, instead of a paper weight.

I use this feature with my family. I lock my account and they log into theirs. Sometimes we have the whole family logged in at the same time. It's a simple matter of changing screens and entering your password and starting your thing, whereas MS Windows, you have to wait until the stupid desktop finishes loading and then the time for logging out... to me it's a hassle.
