It is hard to get
this message accross to people who have not used anything else besides the ms windows. These people think that as long as I can use my ms word and keep getting mesmerized by the beautiful GUI I am happy no matter HOW MUCH I HAVE TO PAY in $$$ and labor to maintain this fine monsterpiece.

I have been using UNIX since 1990 and Linux (RH 9.0) since last June. We never had to deal with ANY of the cantankerous issues pestering MS users and admins. Never any virus problem, never any breakins. We only schedule maintenance of the OS as soon as newer release comes out. But we do this only to be current. We could have stayed with the same version for YEARS. People are still using Solaris 2.5.1 (which came out around 1996!), early IRIX 6.5.x (1997), AIX 4.x (1997?), HP-UX 11.00 (1998) ETC! Mind you we run really big servers and any downtime is lost productivity. Only the 5 year old machines have presented h/w problems a couple of times.

When we see what's going on in the ms windwoes side, wherer people are running like crazy to re-re-...re-patch, reinstall, reboot even for minor changes, install and clean up more antivirus s/w, etc? and we feel THANKFUL EVERY DAY that we don't have to deal with this miserable waste of time.

Anyway, the game has become serious now and MS has started feeling the pressure from all sides. It's time now for MS to clean up and grow up.
