this is why...
...all the predicters of MS's impending doom are wrong. It is ALSO why having strong, viable contenders such as Linux and OS/X is good for EVERYONE, whether they switch from MS or not.

"Linux has forced MS to DROP the PRICES to make the TCO of their systems COMPARABLE to that of Linux"

OK, so they've solved one part of the competition riddle.

"in the long run one saves much more by resorting to more reliable and secure platforms"

AND, they are working on that, too.

Even if they never completely achieve what is possible with a *nix system in regards to security and reliability, if they come close and get their TCO cost close, they have removed most of the reasons people have to switch. And, by doing that, they force Apple and the *nix guys to improve their products and add value to give people more of a reason to switch. Which, in turn, keeps MS on its toes.

They aren't dumb in Redmond, they've seen the writing on the wall, and they are responding, because they have no desire to be unemployed. Sure, their profit margins will take a hit and they will likely lose some market share, but that's a GOOD thing for all of us out here. Linux is the best thing to happen to MS in a long time (and to all of us, as well). It's hurting them in the short term, but will help them, and in turn all of us (even if we never use MS software again) in the long-term.

Having three viable contenders competing for our purchase and service dollars will bring the most value to all of use, no matter what we choose down the road.
