One answer: WinFS
All the bells and whistles in the world don't amount to nothing compared to the possibles of a relational database integrated in the file system.

When you consider that all applications are being revamped with XML support, you begin to understand the power of this holy grail. Search won't be limited to text, it will make search possible through applications and any XML described <ocument.

Also, it will eventually spell the end for content management software.

By being relational, the file system will also spell the end of the DLL hell, because a relational FS will do versioning transparently. Also, you can organize files any way you want, just by giving them new attributes. Searching an existing file will be instantenous. It will be a snap to discover what application is using image X or document Y. If you modify a document used in another document, it will be able to inform ask you if you want to modify a copy or modify it everywhere it's used. You will be able to see where it's used.

Then, link these OS in a local network and finished are the times looking for a file someone created a while ago.

Then, link the documents and applications you want to the Internet, and search will become immensily powerful because search engine will be able to understand what they are looking at. It won't be just text, it will be logical information.

Enough?
