I haven't installed it yet but I believe it is build 1441. Could be wrong. The thing about operating systems - especially ambitious ones - is that it takes a long time to build them. Linus would agree. Who knows when it will be ready? I sure don't but I personally wouldn't expect it until late '05 or '06. To me the most intersting aspect of the system is what they're calling "Indigo" - which is basically an advanced Web services/ptop infrastructure. If they do it right it would make it possible and maybe even easy to build applications that are close to impossible to build today. Sure, a very very skilled developer could try to build his/her own infrastructure for peer to peer interactions between applications and people but it would have to be at least partly re-written every time he wanted to use the code in a new application. By building these services into the OS, devs can spend their time doing things other than plumbing.

What else? I think the XML-based mark-up language is pretty big too because it'll make it much easier for developers to work on real development and leave the UI design to the experts. Today that work is intermingled - code for UI mixed with the rest of the code. This is somewhat like what MS does with ASP.NET today.

There are lots of other things. There are lots of ways to learn more if you're interested. But I doubt you are.
