Your attitude sucks too
"I'm a Windows guy, but I see the virtue in OSX apps that are encapsulated in their own directory so you can just drag them from place to place, machine to machine, etc."

It's only in cetain situations that it's a good idea. If I were making a series of programs that all used a number of the same features, I'd prefer to have a library holding those features that I can refer to, instead of having to program that functionality into each and every program.

"And as far as binary compatibility... if windows 3.x apps can still run on XP, or OS9 apps can run on OSX, then I'm sure the linux community can run apps without having to recompile them."

There's no need to recompile older apps to use on newer versions of Linux. I'm just saying I'd prefer to have the ability to have a program use the full potential of my processor, rather than only using features that were available on processors over a decade old.
