Ask me a hard one
1) how about encapsulated applications a-la-OSX? (Who the heck wants pieces of applications scattered all over the file system. With 500 gig drives on the desktop, who cares if a 20 mb library is duplicated a couple times)

Since Linux doesn't have a problem with keeping multiple concurrent library versions, this doesn't gain anything other than trivializing the
installation process.

The trouble is, it's not a trivial cost. My not-terribly-fat /usr/lib tree is well over a gigabyte. I have hundreds of applications that use a largish percentage of those libraries, so the total would be on the order of hundreds of gigabytes, much of it memory resident.

Not gonna happen. For what it's worth, Apple also uses shared libraries for common system functions such as the display interface -- they pretty much have to. Gnome and KDE aren't going to be any different.

Also note that a lot of libraries that aren't likely to be shared do get loaded in the application directory tree; that's how a lot of commercial packages get distributed. I regularly just tar up the app directory and untar it on another machine.

2) How abiout binary compatibility across versions and distros

Been around forever. Yawn. I'm currently doing an on-again, off-again game that I acquired in the previous millennium, for instance.
