The car analogy is not correct
In that paradigm Microsoft fits perfectly. They are just another car on the highway that is very popular. For the car analogy to work with your linux dilema, each car would need interchangable engines, wheels etc. Otherwise each are unique in terms of the underlying mechanics. An overhead cam and one w/o an overhead cam operate differently at the "OS" level". All systems are for, in a business sense, is to allow people at all levels and professions to work smarter. The end product isn't another computer system. It's a business trying to compete. What difference does it make what system they use as long as it does what they need? Aren't we headed toward an SOA, web based model for most computing anyway? At that point the OS is pretty much moot in a large sense. Striving for compatibility among all of the version of Linux restricts it.....and always will be what holds it back. If every distro and eveyr desktop has to be interchangable iwth others, that leads to the least common denominator syndrome, doesn't it?
