Binary compatibility
Have you ever used OS X? OS9 apps are run in a completely separate OS9 environment! I mean, you can run any app in any operating system if you can launch a separate operating environment inside of it. As for 3.x apps under XP, have you ever actually had to do that yourself? I've had trouble getting some win9x apps working under XP.

As for the "dream" of Linux on the desktop, it's here already. It is my primary work desktop (the other being a Mac OS X) and my only home desktop.
