Who the heck wants duplicate files scattered all over the file system? If you know a library is going to be in a certain place on the system, you can code an application to use that library and make the application smaller.

20MB might not be a lot on a 500GB hard drive, but it increases the download time or reduces the space on a CD/DVD.

"How about binary compatibility across versions and distros"

I'd rather have the program/distro take advantage of all the features of my processor, rather than only those it's inherited from its 386 ancestor.
