No, all people being forced to do the same thing does NOT lead to inovation
Look how many different types of cars we have, but they all use the same gas and can be driven on the same roads, and we can quickly learn how to drive different cars. This is the compatibility we need between desktops, all applications run on all desktops/distributions, and all device drivers work across all desktops/distributions. Users can quickly move between desktops because of the common GUI components, windows, menus, scroll bars, mouse, keyboard, etc. This compatibility forces competion that is the best way to drive inovation.
