Growth Rates
MS's problem is not that they are growing. It's that they are growing at a slower rate than Linux. MS currently has a larger share of the revenue. this means that they need a smaller growth rate to match the absolute dollar growth of Linux. But, if trends continue, that will change.
For the sake of argument, let's ignore cyclical quarterly variations in orders.
If the growth rates continue, MS would see a revenue growth of $624M, while Linux would see a revenue growth of $598M. The quarter after that, MS revenue growth would be $724M, while Linux reveue growth would be $975M - Linux absolute dollar growth exceeds that of MS in only 2 quarters.
The true test is in the rate of increase, not the absolute value of the increase. What I would be interested in is the actual market share by OS. I seem to remember a previous article that showed that a lot of Linux growth is coming at the expense of other *nix variants.
