Why say Microsoft has problems?
This article is about quarterly numbers:

But Windows still has a healthy lead, with growth of 16 percent leading to overall sales of $3.9 billion, IDC said. That was roughly four times the Linux market for the quarter.

Using these numbers, Windows grew from $3.36 billion to $3.9 billion, up $540 million.

Also from the article:
Linux server shipments grew 63 percent to $950 million...

That's a growth from $583 million to $950 million, or $367 million.


So Microsoft actually grew by $173 million more than Linux did during the quarter.

With only a 63% growth rate, Linux is falling further and further behind.

I wonder what share of the market Microsoft will have by the time Linux finishes off the Unix market. Even if Microsoft is predominant, the hardware companies will still be making substantial money off Linux because of the lower software cost, so there won't be much discontent.
