- Where is Uncle Remus?

The linux advocates seem to take delight in comments that seem to show a decline in Mr. Softee's business, but are they the willing victims of a more elaborate plan by Gates & Co to take some of the heat off? MS wrote off some multiple billions on paper to compensate for the overhang from their lush ISO policies of the past decade, which makes them look more compliant with the proposed FASB actions, but does nothing to their actual cash flows. Further, in another ZDNet article, MSFT's cash stash is up almost $10B from last year.
Even the seeming victory for Linux in incremental growth is kind of an arithmetic hoodoo. Linux gained 63 percent and Windows gained 16 percent, which looks good for Linux, but measured in absolute terms, Windows gained 16% on a basis more than 4 times that of linux, so Windows actually gained more dollars than linux.
Windows share has long been measured vs Unix and IBM Mainframe and suddenly showing them as being out sold in the market by linux doesn't account for any decline in unix itself. Some of the linux increase is just shifting dollars from one unix/linux pocket to another rather than any face off with Microsoft and should not be used to show that companies are effectively competing with MS. - Posted by: StorageGuru Posted on: 02/27/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
