Re: reply to "Should be sued if they put S-F back up"-- Sued..?..
The lack of intellectual maturity and rigor amongst our population never ceases to amaze me...

I love you too, Poindexter.

Who said anything about 404 errors and RFCs? Who said anything about any technical aspect? I didn't, so perhaps you are replying to a voice in your head.

What I did say was that someone would be sued if they put up a web site with a name that's confusingly similar to an established trademark. If Sitefinder is taking business away from an e-retail site by responding to a "confusingly similar" URL, what's the difference if they had registered it?

(i.e.--who has shown any harm from the convenience of not getting an ERROR 404 when you mistype a site, and, instead, are offered some likely alternatives)???

ERROR 404 is a HTTP error. A wildcard in the DNS affects all internet protocols, not just HTTP, including any that rely on a NXDOMAIN response if that's what it should be.

The harm is not that Sitefinder offers likely alternatives (read sites that have paid Verisign to be there) to HTTP users. (Why would a rigorous intellectual such as yourself even ask such a silly question?)

The harm is that the rest of the Internet has to work around the irresponsible introduction of the waldcard into the DNS - at not an insignificant cost.

Honestly, the inability amongst some in our population to see beyond their own noses never ceases to amaze me...
