From where I stand and see things
Many want a mix, quite a few want to switch and some are like you, want to destroy a good thing. Microsoft can try all it want's but this is one system it won't be killing or absorbing. Unlike OS/2 Linux has a pretty significant backing as well as strategic and solid foot hold.

The French were sure the Maginot line would hold them safe from the Nazi blitzkrieg... history shows otherwise.

The Nazi's believed the Atlantic wall impregnible... history shows otherwise.

To think Microsoft will be able to erradicate Linux is pure hallucination. Linux is here, people want it and it's being used and will continue to grow in deployment and strength. The growth can be slowed here in the US for a while... but the rest of the world is moving forward with Linux and open source.

Neither side will dominate in the next 5-7 years. In that time frame I see a balance of
50% Windows on the desktop, 30% on the server.
20% Linux on the desktop, 50% on the server.
30% Macintosh on the desktop, 5% on the server
the remainding 15% of the server market will be Unix.

This is a very real possibility one that I would look forward to seeing come true. So let's wait and see... and if in some fluke of chance I am right or very close... you my friend owe me a dinner at Tarpy's. So let's just sit back and watch... (crosses fingers!) devil
