I read what you wrote.
As I read it, your point in the original assumes that Novell, SGI, and IBM are all successes. If they aren't, then maybe they should escape the free software trap they're now in.

In response to the (reasonable) comment:

Or it could be that the Linux users are the ones asking MS for this to help make a smoother migration towards Windows?
EoQ

You replied:

That's it! The users that have been trapped on Linux all these years are desperate for a way to escape to the freedom and excellence of corporate-backed software and support. Why didn't anyone else think of that?

Too bad IBM, Novell and SGI didn't come up with this plan to free the Linux serfs! Sun, of course, already did and look how fast the Linux users are migrating over to it!
EoQ (re-paragraphed)

The first statement is ironic agreement with the point made.

The second statement starts with the observation that IBM, Novell, and SGI did not follow the strategy described.

If all three companies had failed, that would mean they should have been looking for a different strategy from the one they did follow.

We know one strategy they did not follow, as you said in the first paragraph. So the implication of failure for these three companies would be that they should consider switching to the only specified avenue open to them.

That can't be what you actually intended.

So therefore you must be asserting that those three companies must be successes with the strategy they are following.

And that's where I came in.

Then you wrote:

They are the ones who didn't discover that offering free virtualization of Linux on proprietary OSes was the way to capture market share from free software.

And at least two of them are suffering. Maybe "free virtualization of Linux on proprietary OSes" is the way to go. Has a good chance to beat what they're doing.
