What?
Unix and NT also have this technology. I think you're confusing Virtual Machine with Virtual Memory. Every process within NT and Unix load into memory and believe they are the only process on the machine. If they attempt to perform an illegal call to the OS or execute a "protected" instruction, they are shut down and the OS survives.

Today's virus aren't executing illegal instructions or attempting to overwrite protected memory -- as would an errant task that a virtual memory system prohibits. They are leveraging flaws in the OS' API that either permit the operation even though it should be restricted or overflow the buffer of an API call thereby overwriting a portion of the API's program with a "payload". This payload then gives them access to the protected inner rings of the OS and they can then perform operations as root or admin. This access allows them to destroy the machine or, more typically, install a remote control back door for later.

You are correct about the mainframe statement. It has offered both OS and memory virtualization. It's been a long, long time since I've been on a mainframe but they used virtualize many copies of MVS/TSO and they called them guests. You could also log into a product called VM but I was never certain about the relationship of VM and MVS/TSO. I know that I used to use an e-mail product called PROFS (Professional Office System???) in VM but all of our business work was performed in MVS.
