re: ME was just Window 98 with a new name
>>It was the biggest scam out there. It was truly one of Microsoft's shadier moments. They tricked people into thinking ME was the home user version of W2K. It wasn't. It was just Win 98 with enough cosmetic changes to look differnt enough that people thought they were getting something better.

Windows 2000 and XP have more in common with NT than they do with the Win 9X (95OSR1, 95OSR2, 98, 98SE, ME).

ME was still missing the fully functional TCP/IP. IT still used FAT for it's only file system. It had no security at all. It even still had the Windows 98 Memory leak.<<

You're right in many ways, but for the wrong reason. ME was an abortion of an operating system that had no business going "Gold" (Gold code refers to the final version of the software that gets sent to the mass duplication people).

Whereas Windows 98 and SE were solid operating systems that worked WELL, ME had more bugs than a skid row motel. While there was a lot of Win98 code in ME, the programmers did a lot of tinkering with the code to remove certain useful features and crossbred some of Windows 2000/XP style code into the Win98 platform. The real problem is that the two platforms, while they are similar in so far as the programs they will run, are based on fairly different operating principles.

The most significant "change" in ME was the way they attempted to "kill" DOS. Even though the operating system still rode on top of the DOS Command.com kernel, it was impossible to start the machine in DOS mode.

The bottom line here is that the quality control behing Windows ME was an abomination. However, this has NOTHING to do with "XP Reloaded" or whatever cute name they want to give it. Just because the situation is similar (i.e.: Overdue OS and they want to release something in the interim) doesn't mean that it will automatically suck. At this time speculation is kind of a moot point anyhow since Microsoft doesn't even know what, if anything will be in the release.
