No decision on Microsoft antitrust fines for 'weeks'

Moot the press

Making the question "moot" implies you think Microsoft will win, and any fines will be returned, not inflicted, no?!

The fines are a sideshow -- a distraction. The real issue is whether Microsoft is able to leverage their desktop monopoly into a server monopoly. If they can do that, the fines will have been the best investment they ever made [1].

IF they pull off the obfuscate/stonewall/delay act long enough to do with servers what they did with browsers, the issue of server protocols will become moot in the same way that the browser wars did. The outcome of the Federal Court case was moot because Netscape was long dead.

There's no corporate equivalent of a life sentence for murder. Once the bodies are cold, the last one standing "wins" regardless of what the courts may say.

[1] perhaps with the exception of the $50,000 they paid to Seattle Computing Company.
