Aside from the itunes stuff, apple does not hold your data and network hostage with undocumented file formats and protocols. Nor does *nix (though OSX is bsd-based). Easy to migrate from any of those environments compared to migrating from microsoft. One of the reasons MS is not well liked in many circles. They'll take your data but good luck getting it back. EU appears to be trying to save itself from painting themselves into the same IT corner that the US is in.
