Open Source is Killing Microsoft's OS Products
It isn't that Intel hasn't tried. I was told prior to the Vista delay that Intel moved to multi-core chips this year owing to security issues with the prior chips. It turns out that not all faults can be caught by the virtual machine manager. This is a security flaw because the virtual machines are only sort-of-virtual.

The fix is to patch the operating system. This is very difficult to do in binary - which is the proprietary mode used by Microsoft. It is realatively easier with Open Source.

Hence Intel is one of the larger contributors to Open Source Linux and one of the most frustrated supporters of Microsoft. Intel faces significant competition from AMD. They see Multicore tecnology as the only way to continue doubling performance every 18 months which is the mantra of the company. They undoubtedly also see a liability in continuing to provide hardware with known security flaws that must be addressed at the operating system level. The new hardware addresses the security issues at the hardware level. There is no relience on Microsoft - or anyone else to provide that security and Virtualization just like on IBM 390s is possible with higher performance and power savings.
