Re: Can C# run on any platform?
If you take what I said in my prior post to its logical conclusion, yes, C# could conceivably run on any platform, because C# in and of itself is just a language, which right now is compiled to run in the .Net environment. It's conceivable that a compiler for C# (which is an open standard via. the ECMA, by the way) could be written to compile for the JVM. Perhaps the hardest part would be porting the .Net API to the Java environment.

The Mono open source project has been working on porting C# and the .Net Framework to Linux. They've already come out with one or two releases, with a functioning C# compiler. They have ASP.Net and ADO.Net fully implemented in their ported API, with Windows Forms functionality in beta at this point.

I read last year in an issue of Windows Developer Network Magazine that at that point 1% of all ASP.Net web sites on the net were running on Mono on Linux. Not that great, but it shows that it can work.

There's also a GNU project going on for creating an open source version of C# and .Net. I forget what the project's called. I believe I heard they've created a C# compiler that implements generics, though it's my impression that their API port is not nearly as far along as Mono.
