Sun wants to force WORA, not let it be simply another choice. As far as I can tell, the only ones being "hurt" by Microsoft's extensions to Java were developers, and developers should be smart enough to understand the tools they are using. What does it say about Java developers that they were "tricked" by Microsoft?

What's weird is, Sun is in the odd position of having introduced software technology that makes its own server hardware unnecessary -- I don't know if it was intentional or not. Nobody purchases Solaris to run on Intel platforms, especially since Sun itself is also pushing Linux. Therefore, Sun has to rely in the future on income from Java to continue. If Sun loses all control of Java (as IBM wants), where will its future revenue come from? And that, not staving off Microsoft, is why Sun can't give up control of Java.
