I mean, who DOESN'T want to gain market share.

I agree that IBM is turning to open source to regain their hardware dominance. I'm not sure you can say they'll control you though. If anything, open source means they'll have to compete on the merit of their hardware and services. If hardware and services are subpar, well then you can change those and keep the open source software you've been using all along.

As for IBM asking Sun to open source Java, well again I can't blame them for trying. But I've always gone by the rule that he who owns the code gets to choose the licence, and everyone else gets to shut up and deal with it. Sun and IBM are direct competitors in hardware, and owning the Java code is a competitive advantage in Sun's favor. Now releasing the source may make Java better, which would in turn make it compete with .NET better in the long run. But is it worth it to Sun to lose their competitive advantage against IBM (which is a known advantage) to make Java compete better against .NET (in which it is questionable that any meaningful competitive advantages will be gained)? Personally I don't see that it is, at least not at this point in time.
