It really was pretty fast, provided there was nothing included that Microsoft didn't support. The only guarantee you had to be fully supported with a MS JVM was to use MS tools to build your application or applet. But then you could have problems with compliant JVMs. Especially in retrospect, there was no doubt that embrace and extend was just getting cranked up. Of course you also remember that MS could also no longer call their product "Java". And since you bring up judges, remember that MS has lost just about every suit brought against it by Sun with regards to Java.
