where's the letter?
Where can I see the original words of the letter? The snippets from the article make the letter sound grossly incorrect.

... IBM offered to work with Sun to create a project that would shepherd development of Java through an open-source development model.

What does IBM mean by an open-source development model? Isn't open-source just a name for software which has it's source code available? Every company has their own software development model suitable for the company's culture and software type. e.g., waterfall, evolutionary

And isn't Java just a specification? Has can you open source a specification when there is no source code?

Smith said that making Java open-source software would accelerate the adoption of Java software and "open a whole world of opportunity for new applications and growth of the Java community."

I would think that it was Sun's commercial push that has allowed Java to reach a wide audience such as cellphones and other devices. And what's stopping other people right now from adopting it? JBoss has certainly done it while being an open source company.

Making the Java programming model open source would help drive its adoption and ...

Make a programming model open source? It doesn't sound like the author knows what a "model" is.
