Good idea, but...
If Sun opens Java, how will they stop companies like Microsoft from hijacking it? They likely have a couple of years breathing space since MS won't touch Java with a barge pole for quite some time. However, if .NET is not the runaway success that MS want it to be (and there are signs that .NET adoption is somewhat slower than MS would like), they will turn their attention back to Java.

Sun was able to defend Java last time using its licence, however I'm not sure the GPL will give them the same control.

PS. For Martin LaMonica (and his editor), IBM are not asking Sun to make "the Java programming model open source", they are asking Sun to make Java open source. Slight change of words- big, big difference in meaning.
