Its the Benchmarks
One of Microsoft's monopoly power tricks is to get IT professionals bound by silence. They do this by providing OS products for benchmark tests with the stipulation that results of those benchmarks can not be published or otherwise passed on to other IT professionals. This means that only the large corporations, who usually have the profesionals able to do the benchmarking, ever really know how well Vista, or some other OS product compares with say Linux. Smaller businesses and government agencies, who often do not have budget for such benchmarks, get only the marketing blits and visits by Abramoffs. Yes Abramoff billed Microsoft for his services and Yes Abramoff learned his trade at the Gate family law/ lobby firm Preston Gates and Ellis.

Because Linux is Open Source, it has been enhanced a lot by Intel for the new Xeon and Itanium chips now shipping. The enhacements are along the lines of security but also performace and power use. The same could be done for Vista except Intel likely should be paid for that work and likely they want at least as much as a Preston Gates and Ellis lobbiest for that. (at least 500 and hour.) I mean fair is fair.
