I agree
I also was turned on to Linux originally by all of the choices. I remember I was so impressed by WindowMaker and Enlightenment. The next time I was impressed was when Konqueror came out...and now the Xgl is on my machine. When I first downloaded Linux, it made me feel that even though each desktop had weaknesses, I could see tremendous potential coming from all these different projects. If there was only one desktop with its own weaknesses...then that is all you would ever know. You would be forced to choose between this one desktop and windows.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the KDE/Gnome thing. I'm sure freedesktop.org will solve my few complaints. The way I see it, the choice is Windows vs MacOSX vs KDE vs Gnome. There are all pretty exclusive and have their own advantages. If anything KDE and Gnome are more inter operable than any of the others.
