Not going to happen ...
it has been tried before and it didn't work. The problem is that there are major customers that are committed to KDE as well as major customers that are committed to Gnome. Dropping either one would result in an exodus of customers who would quickly flock to a competing distro. The fact that there are multiple desktops on Linux is very much a market driven phenomenon, one that cannot occur with Windows since MS plays the role of benevolent dictator. In the Linux realm there is no benevolent dictator and that radically effects its development patterns. Monopolies and groups of competitors function very differently in a free market and that fact is very difficult for MS centric users to grasp.
