I use both Gnome and KDE about equally. I like the clean interaction of Gnome, yet as you state KDE has more apps...I have always loved this part of using Linux...the ability to use a variety of window managers...This is one of the top five reasons people that I introduce to Linux end up using it...so I would caution that we need to be very careful when calling for standardization. Standardization should happen at the lowest level possible to allow for the greatest possible choices for the end user. Again this is one of the greatest advantages of Linux.
