Could be silver in those clouds
While most are thinking that the Vista delay will put a big dent in PC sales for the holiday season I'm not buying into it.

I simply just don't agree that Joe and Jane Q Public were waiting with baited breath for the release Vista to purchase that new computer for Christmas.

Perhaps the PC makers will lose an arrow in their advertising quiver because they won't be able to hype getting a PC with the new OS. But PC sales will be similar to any other non OS release year with similar ad campaigns and similiar results within a percentage point or two.

Consider this; folks that read this kind of blog and other tech talks are fully involved in this business and follow events closely, but J & J Q Public are not in this business for the most part may only have barely heard of Longhorn or Vista. If they were going to buy a PC for themselves or a loved one, I find it hard to believe Vista was going to make a real difference. Let me see, some mom or dad, or some high schooler or college student is going to say I would have...but no Vista ...no purchase. Yea right.

I believe with Vista shipping in late Jan to early Feb could actually bring more sales at a time in the year that we could probably agree is typically the slowest PC sales time. Now PC vendors have something new to offer after the Christmas crunch and have a little more time to get their pitches in order. Besides by the time we get to Dec 1st PC vendors will probably be offering coupons or certificates for Vista upgrades with a purchase before Dec 23rd anyway.
