IE the most popular browser? Nah!
It's official! I'm an IT professional and I think FireFox is the better browser. IE7 lok

IE is not "popular", simply widespread. This is because the majority of home users are unaware of alternatives and corporate users lock-down PC's and rarely permit internet use in the office. Changing the browser isn't even considered.

This is just another meaningless statistic being bandied about. Better to ask "What is the most downloaded browser?" IE wouldn't even feature, because nobody CHOOSES to install it.
