Open Source Vs Proprietary
May the force be with you. The significance of this story is that Intel has been contributing significantly to Open Source/ Linux to solve security issues and that those contributions are more effective than similar efforts to address security issues in proprietary operating systems - meaning Microsoft operating system products, meaning Vista.

Most of the current Intel processors do not catch all software faults. This means a virtual machine running a virtual operating system can not be truely secure from hackers because the underlying virtual machine manager still passes the fault to the hardware.

Google has taught the world that Virtualization is key to Web 2.0 and any OS product that cannot be patched so it is secure when running virtual machines is worthless in the new age. Hence Allchin's shame with Vista.

It is not like Intel hasn't been trying. Microsoft simply has not played ball with Intel on this mater. It is that proprietary - no API documentation - deal that the EU antitrust regulators have been addressing. Microsoft's proprietary mode means that the patches needed to catch software faults currently flowing to the Intel hardware are being done in binary. That is a lot harder than the Open Source code patches. In fact it has shown to be nex to impossible, as well as untimely.

Hence Intel and all chip manufacturers must implement the security at the hardware level for Microsoft OS products to be truely secure. Hence the new Xeon and Itanium processor lines from Intel.

These processors are based on proven mainframe MultiCore techology which not only solves security issues involving some software falts from a virtual machine inappropriately flowing to the hardware but also power issues and performance issues.

It is clear when investigating Multicore technology why PCs never replaced mainframes as had been expected. But it is also clear that Open Source OS products, like Linux, are going to perform much faster, possibly a magnitude faster, than Vista because the compilers and tools for developers and the OS products themselves have been optimized for those new Xeon and Itanium lines.

Microsoft wasn't going to win a single benchmark with Vista on the Xeon and Itanium processor lines now being shipped. There wasn't a shot in hell of Vista being justified on a cost benefit basis owing to that which meant that every decision maker selecting Vista had to be though of as influenced by an Abramoff.
