Patchworks and Quilts
FIRST: the article is reporting on the horendous patching infrastructure for the MS Windows. No mention is made on the patching status on non windows platforms.

From my experience the situation with UNIX and Linux is much less accute than in ms windows. And we have different UNIXes (AIX, IRIX, Solaris, Linux, OS/X) More importandly, the patches may create another problem extremely rarely.

"What the data is telling us today is that we have a cycle of fixing vulnerabilities...that leaves up open to significant exposure," he said. "We need to make every possible effort to shorten the cycle."

Who can blame the sys admins in organizations with 100s or 1000s of windows PCs? In recent years they are applying every other day these multi-megabyte pathes on all these machines. Let alone that no sane person would just apply the patch without testing it first against the applications that are critical for the business.

Poor MS, it gathered billions of $$$ by selling low end s/w for the small office apps. Now it desparetely wants to grow up and conquer the universe but it realizes that it is not that easy to do the real work without relying on massive BS from the PR depertments....
