Well think of it this way

The steam engine was invented in Europe. Contrary to popular opinion, the automobile was not invented in the U.S., but in Europe. What we invented was mass production, the assembly line. Yet we managed to benefit greatly from the automobile, both in terms of making the cars here, an ingredient in creating our middle class, becoming a major powerhouse of automobile production (for a while), and buying them.

We should not hold the monopoly on innovation, because for whatever reason, some great ideas just don't occur here. They happen and get implemented somewhere else, but we still benefit from them. There's no shame in adopting someone else's idea.
