How are they going to buy much without wealth?
And how are they going to build wealth without coming up with some innovations of their own? One reason why we export so little is that consumers in other countries can't afford what we make. And it's not necessarily because what we make is overpriced. They need to build their own economies to afford what we make, and we'll be better off for it.

I think that's an ingredient that's been missing from the "free trade" deals we've made with developing countries. There's such an income disparity that what happens initially is some of our production moves over to the other country because labor is cheap and regulations are light, and the hope is that as a result over a period of years their economy will develop enough to where they can buy what we make. So far it hasn't worked out that way, though there are encouraging signs that this could finally develop in India and China. Mexico was a dud.
