It's a character issue...

America has become soft. Not enough is demanded of our kids. Parents spoil their kids rotten. High schoolers go out to party and drink on the weekends. In other countries, the kids are studying to pass college entrance exams - you don't pass, you don't go to college...you learn a trade. And it's not just the kids. We've become an entitlement society. Everyone thinks they ought to have a nice vacation every year, drive an SUV...the government should pay our healthcare...and on and on. Back in the day, the notion was that you got *nothing* you didn't go out and earn yourself. And that was incentive enough.

We've largely taken character education out of schools, parents hand the kids expensive toys (and even cars - sometimes even new ones - when they're old enough to drive), sports (which are good in themselves) are given exaggerated placement over studies, and having a good time is learned instead of doing the right thing.

Why should we be surprised that we're going to be passed by?
