over reaction and under education
There is a lot of big brother and doomsday over-reaction in this
thread. The technology uses a very simple, very low memory
device that enables companies to track their inventory within a
few feet of a receiver. This may be a physical portal that a fork
lift can drive through when moving product into or out of a
warehouse, it may be a smart shelf in a store, so it can alert the
warehouse when the shelf needs more inventory, it can scan an
entire basket of product at once, to make your check out quicker
or it can let the security portal at the front door of the store
know that the product you are carrying out has been purchased,
not stolen... it may, someday also interact with your washing
machine or refrigerator, to make your laundry easier and your
shopping list for you and IF YOU CHOOSE, send it to the grocery
delivery company, so your groceries will be on your doorstep
without you going to the store. The RFID tag is not tied to you, it
does not store information about you and it cannot track your
every move. Because it can only read up to a few feet away, the
"big brother" threat is a little overblown. If there must be
legislation, make it something in regards to real privacy... don't
use this to send me e-mail about the products I buy...and, of
course that informationn is ALREADY available to solicitors every
time you use your credit card. The only thing that stops you
from getting junk mail/spam are the pandering laws... ammend
those to apply and you will, in the long run, be better off with
this technology.
